Towards the conclusion of the Second World War, Brenda Rawnsley and her husband Derek came up with the idea of introducing contemporary art to young children who would not otherwise have had access to high-quality artwork.
Within a few years, Brenda established School Prints Ltd to sell original lithographs to schools, commissioning several prominent living artists to contribute to the initiative. Brenda sought guidance and support from the art historian Herbert Read, and together they selected the artists.
The prints were created by the Baynard Press, using either stone or zinc plates drawn by the artists, who were asked to limit their use to six colours.
These original lithographs were often the first exposure to real art for many young people of that era, and they reflect the artistic trends of the time.
