Watercolour design for Dunbar Hay Ltd, a gallery-cum-shop founded in 1936 by Cecilia Dunbar Kilburn and Athole Hay. The business sold furniture, ceramics, fabrics and patterns, and traded for four years before being bombed during World War Two. Much of the stock and all of the business records were destroyed, but when the shop existed it flourished as a place where good design could be found. In this print we have simple objects beautifully arranged: kettle, teapot, breadboard, matches, a pair of scissors – all humble.
