Cleaning

Tests made to determine strength of cleaning solution required and carefully applied giving consideration to the varnish or paint layer in cases where there is no varnish.

Varnish removal

Again, test to ascertain solution strength and time required to soften the varnish in question before it is removed. Varnish is lifted not rubbed so as to avoid any paint erasure of more volatile colours and delicate glazes

Relining and patches

Linen is usually used or a textile that matches the original with the same linen usually used, or a textile that matches the original with the same amount of warp and weft to the square inch.

The new linen is stretched to the same tension as the original. The back of the painting is cleaned and the new relining canvas applied using the wax method.

The wax method is easily reversed as opposed to using glue. It follows that as old pictures are made of organics then wax is ideal and also is the best preservative.

Patches

Patches are used to repair tears where relining is not required, patches should extend beyond the tear to take up the canvas tension, the edges of the patch champfered so they will not show the front.

Touching in

Where torn or missing areas need filling in, first gesso is applied to raise the level of the surface as required. The paint used is mixed in the studio from pure pigments. These have the slowest rate of change which means the touching in work will last much longer without becoming noticeable.

Revarnishing

All varnish applied is distilled in the studio from the highest grade picture varnish resin. This finish enriches the picture, protects it and gives it depth, without any artificial antique sheen of commercially made, ready mixed varnish. A micro chrystaline preservative wax is then brushed on to all oil paintings to give further protection

Restoration of Ornate Frames

These are firstly degreased. Any missing parts are cast using reinforced plaster or hand moulded and fitted in place. The new parts are coated with the same boll and gilt tone as the original frame and then toned down to match the aged original, where gold is missing more can be added to the high points without over painting. The whole frame is then polished to bring up the duller areas and give the whole a new lease of life

Restoration works on paper

Cleaned and dried naturally. Watercolour, engravings, prints, never any bleaching.

All paper works are cleaned and dried naturally. The older the paper the more organic it is - usual rag/cotton paper, which generally gives much better results.

Newer commercially manufactured papers containing different ingredients become more difficult to clean for many reasons, but each will be assessed individually and thoroughly tested for treatment.

Unusual Media

We are very happy to frame whatever it is you like. We have a great deal of experience in framing fabric works and although they create a challenge they also give some exciting and dramatic results. We are frequently asked to make box frames for 3d pieces, and have framed everything from spiders and other insects, to shoes and glasses, an amazing selection of clothing  and sports equipment through to weapons of war, records, feathers and button collections.

Picture Hanging

We provide a picture hanging service, whether it’s particularly high up, a complicated group or a series, a quantity of pictures to hang or even just a case of not having the necessary tools for the job.

Laminating

We are able to offer both a dry mounting and laminating service. Dry-mounting is permanently backing a poster or print or photograph onto an acid free mountboard, totally flattening it and minimizing the look of damaged or creased artwork. For example, large school photos that have been rolled for years forgotten in the back of a cupboard!

Laminating is another process we can offer with our vacuum press. This method puts a film onto the surface minimizing reflections and giving it a uv filter. There is a choice of backings for either process from archival mountboard to a rigid MDF backing. The surface finish can be selected according to the artwork itself. This can be a good presentation solution when dealing with large non-valuable pieces on paper.

They can look very effective and it removes the need for glass, keeping the weight and cost of overall framing down. Laminated work does need a frame nevertheless, as the board will not stay flat without support.
